Books Every Writer Should Read

There are plenty of books about writing. Go check out the hundreds of books on Amazon. Some of them are free, which is great for writers, but beware; free isn’t always better. Professionally published books about writing are written by professional authors who’ve spent a long time in the field, learning the craft, and they’ve seen a lot more than some random guy with an opinion about adverbs.

One of my favorite books about writing is The Truth About Fiction by Peter Schoen. It’s a great overview of the entire craft. It is straight forward without frivolous writer-speak in metaphors and useless similes.

Another is Steering the Craft by Ursula Le Guin. (2015)

Beware of books about writing that were published more than ten years ago. Thing change. Ten years ago, ebooks weren’t yet a thing. Amazon had yet to plunge into the publishing industry. The rules are different today. Tastes, market trends, and the like have all changed.

The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction by Philip Athans, is great if you want to write in those genres. It is an overview of tropes and stereotypes and general advice.

Just Write: Creating Unforgettable Fiction and a Rewarding Writing Life by James Scott Bell, (2016) is about more than just the do’s and don’t’s of writing. It has advice for writers in more than just the technical side.
